My Birthday

I am getting sooo old! We just celebrated the start of my second to last year in my 20s!!! Where has the time gone?! This year our celebration was pretty low-key! I wanted Vietnamese pho since I hadn't eaten it since before I was pregnant, so my parents and brothers took us out with Nolan!

Look closely, he's wearing shoes!

Nolan's first beer! Ha, J/K-this is for Uncle Twav
Nolan's Momma did not approve!

Eric and I are looking forward to celebrating both of our birthdays at a fancy restaurant this weekend courtesy of Nolan's PP and GiGi! Also thanks to Nolan's Grandma for babysitting (this will mark the first time Eric and I will be away from Nolan!!!).

2 months!

Nolan is 2 months old today! It still feels like he was born yesterday and also that he's been home with us forever! We had his 2-month check up today too, he's a growing boy! 12 pounds 4 ounces, and 22.5 inches long! He also had to get shots :(...I am a nurse, I know the importance of these immunizations, and I have seen first hand what happens to some children who do not receive their vaccines, but it broke my heart watching his sweet, innocent face go from smiling to screaming!! I almost lost it right there with him! Good thing he cried for less than a minute and was over it, I hope the next 24 hours are just as good to him! Here are some pics of our 2-month old!!

2 Months! (please ignore my foot...)

Close up!

Trying out the bumbo

I think he is singing/talking/laughing here!

Sweet face, he likes looking at himself in the mirror...

Definitely singing here, he loves his morning music time!

Sometimes is not a fan of my singing...

The sweetest little sad face ever! Trust me, Eric
and I do whatever he wants when he makes this face!

Birth Announcement

Did you see Nolan's Birth Announcement? I know it's a little late (he will be 8 weeks on Friday...), but I couldn't resist getting one from shutterfly, I think it turned out pretty cute! What do you think? I definitely did not choose a typical "birth announcement" picture but I love this one, it shows more of his personality. Thanks to Dana Ruth Photography, http://www.facebook.com/DanaRuthPhoto,
for capturing our sweet boy so perfectly, it's already hard to remember when he was this little! Also, special shout-out to Mrs. Blystone for the coupon!

We have a grunter...

Those of you who have met Nolan know this to be true, but for those of you who haven't let me fill you in, Nolan is quite a grunter. He grunts for normal baby reasons, like gas and pooping (and he seems to have lots of this, I attribute that to him being a boy, since nothing I eat or any drops I give him seem to make a bit of difference), he grunts to communicate, like "I'm hungry" or "change me, please", and sometimes he seems to grunt for no reason at all (Nurse friends don't fret, he is NOT in respiratory distress, it's not that kind of grunt, it's very purposeful). At first this made me nervous and since he does this all day and all night, it made me lose lots of sleep, because for every grunt I would be wide awake studying/assessing him! After talking with the pediatrician (who seems to think he will simply stop doing it after a few months), we decided he never looks uncomfortable or even unhappy when he grunts, thus he is probably totally fine and that Momma was just going to have to get used to it ;) I am happy to report I have gotten used to it and sleep is soooo much easier now at night! I know what grunts mean what and somehow my body wakes up for only the important ones! Hopefully our very "talkative" boy will continue to communicate well through adulthood, it's very important for the President of the United States to be able to speak well!! (Ha!)

Ready to Run!!!

The weather here has been amazing!! Temps in the high 50s and 60s and sunshine daily! It's definitely my type of January! It has been so nice that Nolan and I have been visiting my favorite places to walk, run and just be outside! So far he likes to be outside so much that he falls asleep immediately once the stroller moves!

The weather has also been successful in getting me in the mood to RUN!!! I didn't run much when I was pregnant because at the beginning I was training to walk the half marathon with my mom, and once you are pregnant you are supposed to start new exercises, thus I was unable to run the entire pregnancy...and even though I don't consider myself a runner, I really, really wanted to run by the end of the pregnancy! I have my follow-up appointment with the midwife on Wednesday, I am hoping this weather holds out until then so I can get my running fix Wednesday night!!!! My goal is to run the Music City half again this year with a time under 2 hours, we shall see how training goes with a Nolan at home....

speaking of Nolan, guess who is 6-weeks old as of Friday? Can you believe some Momma's have to go back to work now?! So thankful to be home a few more weeks!!!!

I just missed a smile in this pic!!! Try to picture the sweetest
smile you ever saw and insert here!

Shhhh...we are sleep training....

Nolan and I started sleep training this week. Even when I was pregnant I knew sleep would be a big priority for when Baby Tinch arrived. I started research and reading after I hit the 12 week mark. I decided to go with this book: Image Detail It was recommended by some mommies whom I know have wonderful sleepers, so we are trying it out! It is a bit early for sleep training according to the book but so far Nolan has been a really good, easy temperament baby (don't get me wrong Nolan and I talk about patience everyday, he has to be patient with his brand new, very slow Momma and Daddy and I have to be patient when I don't know what he wants, but for the most part he is happy and rarely cries-yes, we thank God everyday!). So the book says for these type kids we can start as early as 6 weeks! What is sleep training? Honestly it is training for baby's parents, not the baby, you simply learn your baby's sleepy cues and put him down to sleep before he is overtired and cranky. For Nolan's age, he should only have 1-2 hour wake periods at a time before he is tired! All this seems simple enough when I was reading, but it's tougher than I thought! Nolan's cues can be vague and sometimes, his parents are a bit selfish and try to keep him awake to play with us instead of put him to bed like we are supposed to...but I will say since I started this on Tuesday, his sleep periods are already more regular, AND...he is sleeping 6 hours at a time at night (you would think I was sleeping that long but not the case, Momma still has to watch her shows...I know, ridiculous....but normally I do get 5 hours which is soooo much better than 3 or 4! Nez mentioned the term "pregnancy haze" to me this week, and it's so true, I think I am finally coming out of it and Nolan is 6 weeks old today, sleep like this is the only way out!!!). We still have more work to do (I'm a little worried that Nolan only naps in bouncy seats or the swing or car seat at this point) but so far so good! Any Mommies reading this with sleep advice for us very brand new parents, please comment, we need all the help we can get!

Happy New Year!

Still in awe of our Baby Boy
New Years Eve was a different experience this year, don't get me wrong, we never were super exciting people, but now with Nolan we are even less so...We had plans to meet various out of town visitors for dinner in East Nashville. They all wanted to meet Nolan and we were planning to show him off while getting some adult conversation with some fabulous people we haven't seen in a while! Well New Years Day came and Nolan had other plans, he woke up with a stuffy nose! Poor baby, his nostrils are only so big, even small boogers were causing problems! Then after he woke up from a nap he felt warm, so we took his temp and he was 99.4! The MD had told us if he had a temp of 100.4 he would be admitted to the hospital at this phase in his life (or before his first round of immunizations...). Thus we decided to forgo dinner plans to be good parents and stay at home with our snotty baby...I was in bed before 9pm. No worries, I saw the ball drop at 12 because we were up for a feeding. It's amazing how life changes so quickly and how much you really don't mind at all! We missed seeing good friends but we were more than happy to be home with each other, there will be more New Years celebrations...

Christmas in a post....

As promised I wanted to update you on all of our Christmas happenings! Now that the madness seems to be over, I will post about all of our Christmases (plural Christmas?) in a single post!

On Tuesday the 21st after Eric worked a half day we set off to Texas with Nolan's Uncle Al and Aunt JJ (Austin and Jill, they wanted those names...). Yes, we drove. Yes, we are a bit crazy to travel 10+ hours in a car with a nursing newborn, but it was the only way we were going to have a TX Christmas this year so we did it! For those of you wondering about the nursing logistics, we simply decided to see what Nolan would do, we weren't sure if he would take a bottle in his seat or at all, but he did! He was a wonderful traveler! I pumped in the car using a converter thing and he took a bottle from me or his Daddy, it worked perfectly, we made the same amount of stops as we would have anyway!

So we got to Daddy and Gail's late Tuesday night. We relaxed on Wednesday and celebrated with Eric, Nicki, Jack, Jason, Daddy and Gail on Thursday night! We were disappointed that Nolan didn't get to meet his cousins Presley and Quaid and Aunt Keeley but so thankful that Keeley didn't bring strep throat to Nolan! Friday, I had a day of pampering with a manicure and pedicure! It was wonderful, however as I type, I am noticing my manicure is long gone....We had a great (very short) trip! We left early Saturday (Christmas Eve) to head back in time for Eric's Grandmomma's Christmas. And Nolan's mom failed to take many pictures in TX...but here is proof we were there!

This is on PP and GiGi's chair

So glad someone took this one...we didn't sleep very well in TX,
pretty sure this is in the middle of the day!

Grandmomma's Christmas was next, and we were very tired when we got there but we were so glad to make it back in time! We had a great meal and opened presents and guessed the toothbrush color (a yearly tradition, Eric, Nolan and I all guessed right this year!!). No pics from there...sorry, I really am trying to improve on my picture taking abilities!

Christmas morning we woke up in our own beds, opened presents! Eric and I got each other the same thing...great minds think alike....then we headed to Nolan's Grandma and Grandpa's to open more presents and have a traditional Christmas feast! I was well rested this day so I have more pics!

Uncle Al got us a Snuggy, I love it, and am modeling with the remote...

Not great quality but here is Nolan exercising on Christmas

After Grandma's and Grandpa's we headed to Nana and Pawpaw's for more presents and more food! Nolan meet Stef, Chad, Gavin, Gage, Brooklyn, Nathan, Zack and Pawpaw for the first time! There are so many people at Nana's and soooo many presents, there was no room for a camera but I did sneak this one before we left:

The day after Christmas we celebrated Christmas with Nolan's Grammy and Grandpa, Uncle Adam, Aunt Crystal and Uncle Ryan and cousin Caelum! We opened more presents and ate more food! Here is a picture of all of Nolan's loot (Grammy likes to buy for her grand babies).

Finally, as a special treat, Grandma Ward and Aunt Karen came to visit/meet Nolan! They got here on the 27th, and we celebrated Christmas with them too! More presents and more food also, Nolan saw his first dinner and show and got to tour a mansion! We had a great time on their visit! Here is Nolan with his Great-Grandma Ward:

We had a wonderfully, blessed Christmas this year! Thank you to all our friends and family for making Nolan's first Christmas so special!
